Recognition
My philosophy towards finding clients and building a base is focussed around organic growth and word of mouth.
I believe in building longer term relationships by being present and available but not pushy or aggressive.
This is partly driven by my personality (aggressive sales are just not my thing) but also by a longer term strategy.
This is a business that I am trying to build into something that could sustain me, but I am already sustained by another income.
So I can be patient and play the long game.
If I aggressively try and poach clients then I am actively taking clients from other photographers.
I know how hard it is to find clients in this game, and I have only been playing for a couple of years. The last thing I would want to do is steal other photographers clients.
However - should a client come to me and ask me to use my services because of what they have seen elsewhere - or want to trial me to see if we are compatible, then I have no issue.
Part of the strategy relies on visibility.
Find some good businesses to collaborate with - swap services and expertise - be generous.
Here is a link to some recent images from a networking and podcasting event that I photographed for the organisers - these were shared on a business site where I co-work and are now there as a gallery of the kind of work I can do - which may drive some traffic and queries - you never know!
