I thought so at the time, but when I came to start taking images I realised that the ceiling lights and background TVs were a distraction so had to work around them. I was committed though - now I had to herd people in front of the signage as they arrived to try and photograph as many of the attendees as possible. So the key observations I made initially were: Strong contrast between light and shadow with quite defined edges - so a strong key light. Catchlight in the eye indicates a small lightsource, which could be flash or fixed, however its a small beauty dish with a diffuser layer Key light is angled down towards the subject, but is low enough to still be seen in the eyes, so maybe 35 - 35 degrees above the eye line, There is some shadow under the eyebrows and around the eyes which indicates a higher light source Key light is also at around 45 degrees to the left of the subject (stage left) as evidenced by the shadow cast by the nose Solid background means quicker shutter speed and no background lights The light dappling on the left of the image could not be coming from the Key light so is either a reflector or a secondary light source Light on the neck could indicate another reflector bouncing some light back up there There is a short depth of field so we can looking at a low aperture of f1.8 - f3.5 There is no distortion to indicate a small focal length and the face and head appear very prominent. Honestly this was really tricky, even once the set up was as close as I could get, replicating the pose as a self portrait was a challenge. Once I had an image I was happy with I did some simple edits to match the whites of the beard and balance the secondary light with the main. It also has a long flat top but is preceded with some steep climbs. On this particular day the weather at our starting point was dry and windy. As we got higher the wind got colder and the tip section was shrouded in cloud. There is a particularly long and sleep part of the climb towards the top where there is 300m or so of peat and rubble to navigate and clamber up, which on this March day lead us into cloud and a much colder layer. We started seeing spots of snow and frost, followed by impressive ice. By the time be got to the flat top (this image is the crossing before the final relatively flat walk to the summit) the ice was impressive not least of all because it was almost horizontal with the driving wind. The whole wire fence leading up was like this and was fascinating to walk past. In Blaydon there sits a restored water mll, housed in the original building from 1730 when the water mill was used to mill corn for animal feed. Over the next 2 and a half centuries the wheels and equipment were removed, the barn used as storage until the whole lot fell into disrepair and was derelict. In 1994 the land and barn was purchased and site restored using equipment saved from another mill. This one has now been converted to run a series of belt driven woodworking machines and is managed by a number of volunteers who demonstrate the workings thought the day. However this view is looking towards the west with the 3 bridges in view, so I will have to come back on a decent sunset to grab these with the setting sun! It’s amazing how the buoyancy of water allows such high things to just float. Fun fact - water density affects buoyancy, and the density is impacted by both temperature and salinity. The colder and more salty the water, the more dense and buoyant it will be. So technically I guess I have failed my own challenge as I have not taken an image each day. That being said, so far in the last 13 days I have taken at least 50 images that I am relatively happy with, so progress has been made. That was, after all the point of the month long project - not just to try and really explore a subject, but to also explore the habits I think I need to embed to be able to comfortably and regularly produce good images. Like everything, sometimes we need a break. Our world essentially ends right there and all we have ahead is the inhospitable sea. I wanted to simplify things and this certainly did that. It also really made me think of the broader picture because I simultaneously could not zoom in and capture the subject of the image in more detail (Like this boat to the right) OR get far enough away from the subject to get everything into the frame that I wanted. These are designed to let firemen know where and what size the pipe feeding the hydrant is. The top numbers are the size of the pipe in mm The bottom numbers are distance from the sign in meters. However the 6 indicated a very small pipe so I suspect that this is an imperial one that remains from before the 1970s when they began to convert them. This was very much a lesson in understanding depth of field vs light source intensity. With the macro lens the focal lengths I was looking at to get the whole image in sharp focus were too high - as far as f22. I then selected them in Lightroom and imported them into photoshop as layers. Selecting them all I auto aligned and then auto blended as a stack, which resulted in an OK focus stack. The rim is still a little soft and I thing the merge may have gotten a little confused by the cut crystal, but for a first attempt using software that was not really designed for it, I think its an ok image. One major challenge was getting perspective right - even in this image I am not perfectly vertical to the subject - the bottom side of the glass is slightly fatter than the top side. Goatfell is the highest peak on the island at 874m, and is the last in a circular chain of peaks that encompass the top end of a 4-5 mile valley called the Glen Rosa Valley. The great characteristic of this peak is that it towers over the coastline almost throwing down a challenge every time you look at it. As I was making my way across the effects of the wild fire became clear to see, with a whole side of the valley consumed and backed with ash. You’ll be able to see in the images below how the fire reached almost to the top of the ridge and it almost looked like blackened fingers were reaching for the skies. If you have not seen or heard of MC Esher I recommend looking them up. They drew amazing studies that played with perspective and are fascinating pieces of art. The warm brick work and cobble street gives an impression of age and I particularly like the leading lines provided by the curb (intended) and the telegraph wires (pure fluke lol!) I don’t know why I like this one, it just shows a lot about Durham - look at the lovely street lamps, only present on certain streets in the city. Because the Wear valley is quite a steep one, there are many different levels and layers to these kinds of shots. I will have to come back next winter when more of the chimneys are in use and we have lots of steam and smoke trails. I have de-saturated the background in the edit to make the red pop whilst also making sure it’s not too vibrant and artificial looking. The shadow makes a nice element in the image too.
